Born in New York, Shaakir learned how to play the Saxophone in the New York Public School System. A former student of Berklee College of Music and an Alumnus of Prairie View A&M University of Texas, Shaakir quit playing the Saxophone for 15 years while pursuing other careers.

His first album, “a dif'rent kinda SAX,” (1999) landed him national recognition and a lengthy tour with the Armed Forces in the U.S. and abroad to include

Germany and Italy. However, in 2007 his wife/business partner (Rhonda) was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and lost the battle in 2009.
